On February 24th, 2024, the Kalasrot Art Gallery echoed with the melodious strains of Indian classical music in a grand tribute concert to the late sitar maestro, Ustad Ilyas Khan. The event, a collaborative effort by Trisaamaa Arts, Kalasrot Art Gallery, and Ustad Umar Khan Sangeet Sabha, brought together a diverse range of talented artists to celebrate the legacy of this under-appreciated genius.
The evening commenced with a soul-stirring sitar recital by Ustad Irfan Khan. Known for his virtuosity and ability to weave intricate melodies, Ustad Irfan Khan undoubtedly captivated the audience with his rendition of ragas that were likely part of Ustad Ilyas Khan’s repertoire.
Following this captivating performance, Matyas Wolter took center stage, showcasing his mastery of both the sitar and the surbahar. The surbahar, a cousin of the sitar with a deeper, richer sound, offered a unique sonic experience, further enriching the musical tapestry of the evening.
The concert culminated in a mesmerizing classical vocal recital by Sreeja Mangat. Her mellifluous voice, imbued with emotion and control, transported the audience to a realm of pure aesthetic delight.
This tribute concert not only paid homage to Ustad Ilyas Khan’s contributions to Hindustani classical music but also provided a platform for established and upcoming artists to showcase their talent. It was undoubtedly an evening that left a lasting impression on all who were fortunate enough to be present.
